A phobia is an intense fear of something that in actuality, poses little or no threat. A person could have a phobia of practically anything. While realizing that A phobia is an intense fear of something that in actuality, poses little or no threat. A person could have a phobia of practically anything. While realizing that the fear is unreasonable, the person can’t help but feeling anxious each time he/she’s thinks about the phobia. And when the person is actually confronted by the phobia, he/she usually is terrorized and the feeling of fear becomes overwhelming.
The feeling gets so unnerving that the person actually makes the effort of going way out of his way to avoid coming into any form of contact with his phobia ever again. For instance, a person who suffers from acrophobia, i.e. the fear of heights, might end up driving an extra twenty miles to work because his phobia doesn’t permit him to take the tall bridge. Thus, phobias need to be treated and dealt with before they take complete control of life and make your anxiety levels skyrocket to new highs.
For you information, there are four common types of phobias. The first type is called ‘animal phobias’ and it includes all the fears that people have of various animal and insect species, such as the fear of cats, the fear of spiders, the fear of dogs, and so on and so forth. The second type is called ‘natural environment phobias’; comprising of fears that come about because of objects in nature such as the fear of heights, the fear of storms, the fear of the dark, etc. The third common phobia type is named ‘situational phobias’. As the name suggests, this type of phobias are triggered due to a specific situation, for instance the fear of flying, the fear of elevators, and the fear of being closed in, to name just a few. Lastly, the fourth and final type of common phobia type is called ‘blood injury-injection phobias’; comprising of fears which arise due to the threat of injury or bloodshed such as the fear of being shot, the fear of needles, etc, etc. Although these four categories are quite comprehensive, categorizing certain phobias becomes quite hard such as in the case of the fear of choking or the fear of clowns.
People who suffer from phobias can exhibit a wide variety of symptoms which are common to anxiety-related issues. The symptoms are both emotional as well as physical, while the anxiety can range from mild discomfort to an all-out panic attack.

What you need to remember is that when your phobia increases to such an extent that it disrupts the normal running of your life, you make the effort of seeking out medical help. Treatment for phobias has been found to be very effective and usually takes the form of a particular type of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy known as Exposure Therapy.
